Authentic Pilates was devised by Joseph Pilates, a German born in 1880. After developing his own series of exercises, Joseph launched his first studio in New York in 1926. His classes were quickly embraced by gymnasts and athletes looking to improve strength, grace and stamina. Prior to his death in 1967, he chose Romana Kryzanowska to carry on his teachings. Now, anyone wishing to teach Authentic Pilates must undergo a minimum of 600 hours' apprenticeship with Romana or her fellow master teacher, Marjorie Oron.
